My First WOW-Experience
No this, is not about World of Warcraft, I am talking about the latest and greatest software from Microsoft - Windows Vista! Today I got the DVD with the good stuff for free from my university as I am a student in computer science. With my brandnew QuadCore runing at 2,4GHz I did not expect any problems, so I slammed in the DVD and booted from it. And then... I waited while a screen showing a cursor showed up, but nothing else. I was asking myself: Where damn God is the progress bar or at least a message asking for patience?? But I could still move the mouse cursor, so I just went on waiting... until I got pleased with a dialog requiring my licence key: God I really missed that :)
But no problems here, the installer moved on showing up my hard drive partitions. I had already an ubuntu installed on that machine, but I had created a FAT32-partition of 45 GB in the first sector. I dit not expect any problems here. So selected that volume and clicked the next button... Ooops, the installer is telling me this partition has to be NTFS. Okay FAT32 is rather outdated... fortunately I found an option to format the partition in NTFS. So I did. Again I hit the next button and... Damn! The installer is telling me something, that no suitable partitions have been found to install the system! So I fired up google and searched for the problem. I went to an official support website from Microsoft telling me about 7 potential solutions for my problem: BIOS too old, SATA driver not loaded, blabla... I went freaky. My bios was up to date and my hard drive was working without any problems in Ubuntu! I changed the BIOS settings and rebooted. Tried to format the partition from within Ubuntu, nothing helped. After various restarts and having typed in the licence key many times... I remembered the old days: So I erased the whole disk with the Vista installer and clicked next for the last time... , because now it worked! So these rules are still valid to day:
- Vista is the only God you shall have no other Gods before it.
- Vista does not care about you wanting to install any other system, if it is not Windows.
- Vista does not like any communist Linux distribution on its holy hard drive
